What does it mean to spend ethically?

 

Social Responsibility

Companies that understand being human. These are people who respect their employees and fair labor standards, which means fair wages and safe working conditions. It also means engaging with customers, partners, and media in a respectful manner that furthers social equality.

Basically, they're good people doing good things. 

 

Sustainability

Companies that know how their business affects the environment, and strive to keep their footprint as small as possible. This includes abiding by environmental regulations, but more importantly it means going above and beyond. It's setting goals to be less wasteful, educating the organization about environmental conservation efforts, and making proactive decisions to keep our planet safe. 

 

Proactive Pursuits

Companies that strive for perfect solutions. As many socially responsible systems in place or environmental certifications a company claims, it's unlikely that their supply chain is as clean as they are. There are no perfection options currently, and things like where a material is sourced and how it is obtained can disrupt an otherwise perfect company. 

This is where the individual comes in. This is where a company, person, or legislator standing against unfair, unethical, or environmentally dangerous actions can make a difference.
